CFBNJ is deeply disappointed that Congress has passed a historic, nearly $200 billion cut to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) — the largest reduction to the program in its history. This devastating legislation will reduce or eliminate benefits for millions of vulnerable seniors, veterans, working families, people with disabilities, and so many others. It is intentionally designed to put up red tape and barriers to accessing critical support.
For every meal food banks help put on the table, SNAP helps put nine. Filling the gap left by these cuts will be daunting for organizations like CFBNJ, who are already hard pressed to meet the ever-growing needs of our neighbors facing hunger in one of the most expensive states in the country. Already, nearly 1.1 million New Jerseyans are food insecure — an increase of about 65% since the height of the pandemic. Congress’s decision to take food off the tables of those who need it most is nothing short of unconscionable.
With the passage of this bill, your partnership and support are more important than ever before. As more of our neighbors turn to us for help, we’ll be here for them — because food is a basic human right.
Now is the time to UNITE. For New Jersey kids. For New Jersey seniors. For New Jersey families. For our New Jersey neighbors in need.
