STATEMENT FROM CARLOS M. RODRIGUEZ, PRESIDENT & CEO OF THE COMMUNITY FOODBANK OF NEW JERSEY, ON
THE TRUMP ADMINISTRATION’S NEW SNAP RULE
Hundreds of thousands of people in need will lose SNAP benefits in the face of tighter work requirements
HILLSIDE, NJ—December 5, 2019
The Community FoodBank of New Jersey is deeply disappointed to see the Trump Administration finalize a rule that will rob nearly 700,000 people nationwide of SNAP benefits, including as many as 12,000 neighbors in need right here in New Jersey, where families already struggle with a high cost of living. In the Administration’s broader effort to limit access to much-needed nutrition assistance, this rule is yet another attack on SNAP, which has proven to spur economic activity and improve the overall health and well-being of recipients. The cruel and counterproductive policy will only increase hardship, as those that are already struggling to find work are now going to go hungry.
Further, we would like to thank all who took action against this rule change—making it clear that New Jersey opposes cuts to anti-hunger initiatives. We will continue to fight hunger by working to ensure that SNAP benefits are available for those facing economic difficulties.
