CFBNJ is deeply disappointed that the House of Representatives has passed a Farm Bill that fails to roll back the $187 billion in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) cuts included in H.R. 1 (the “One Big Beautiful Bill”). While some changes were made during negotiations, the bill still raises serious concerns for food banks and the communities we serve.
Why This Matters
The Farm Bill plays a critical role in shaping federal nutrition programs and food access nationwide. Unfortunately, several provisions in the current version will make it harder for our neighbors to get enough to eat and for food banks like CFBNJ to meet growing need:
- Funding for The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) falls significantly short of the $500 million that anti-hunger advocates, including Feeding America, have pushed for. TEFAP is essential because it allows food banks to purchase food. Reduced funding means food banks will have to stretch already limited resources even further.
- This Farm Bill does not roll back the $187 billion in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) cuts included in H.R. 1 (the “One Big Beautiful Bill”). These cuts are taking food off the tables of millions of Americans, particularly older adults, families with children, veterans, unhoused individuals, and people with disabilities.
- The bill does not delay the shift of SNAP administrative costs to states — a change many advocates have urged lawmakers to reconsider. This will place added pressure on state systems and impact the delivery of critical services.
What Happens Next
