Last week, the House of Representatives voted to advance its budget reconciliation bill that includes $300 billion in cuts to SNAP and completely eliminates funding for SNAP-Ed nutrition education. At a time when millions of families are struggling to keep up with rising costs, these cuts would increase hunger and hardship, putting healthy food further out of reach by:
- Taking 9.5 billion meals off tables nationwide
- Forcing New Jersey to pay $100 million in program costs – an added expense that our state simply cannot afford
- Pushing nearly 850,000 New Jerseyans who rely on SNAP even closer to the edge
If passed by the Senate, these cuts would seriously endanger the well-being of seniors, children, families, veterans, and local businesses throughout New Jersey and across the nation – but the fight isn’t over yet. The proposal now moves to the Senate, where there’s still a critical opportunity to shape the outcome.
Your advocacy remains more essential than ever before. Here are three things you can do to help save SNAP:
- Contact your senators and tell them, “Don’t forget about SNAP!” While the bill presents many important issues for our senators to address, they must not overlook the critical need to stand up for SNAP and protect food assistance for those who need it most.
- Reach out to your representative and let them know your feelings on how they voted on the bill. After it passes through the Senate, the bill must go to a final vote in the full Congress – so there’s still time to make your voice heard by House representatives.
- Urge friends and family to advocate and share information on the importance of SNAP via social media.
