Dawn visits CFBNJ’s Fortescue mobile pantry from nearby Newport, where she lives with her husband and two kids. Friendly and optimistic, she’s made plenty of friends at the pantry. Dawn greets everyone she meets with a smile and a kind word.
“I moved to this area when I was 18 years old. Everyone here is very nice, so I’m nice to them, too,” she told us.
Dawn and her husband both work hard, but they need a little extra help putting food on the table. She cleans a local hotel, and her husband is a machinist in a bottle factory.
“The pantry gives me what I don’t have and a little bit extra,” she said. “It helps a lot.”
Dawn’s son is a recent high school graduate contemplating his next move, and her daughter is in eighth grade. They especially appreciate when she brings home canned proteins, like tuna, that they can have for lunch.
“Everything we get here is helpful. You can’t go wrong,” Dawn said.
