Our New Jersey neighbors are counting on CFBNJ to continue providing food without pause. In response, we have gotten over 20,000 emergency meal kits safely into the hands of those in need, provided more than 9,000 Family Packs to households whose children no longer have access to school meals, and distributed millions of pounds of nutritious food to our network of partner agencies who work tirelessly to serve their communities.

Recent executive orders in New Jersey have mandated the closure of schools and the shuttering of businesses considered non-essential, encouraging all residents to stay home in an unprecedented effort to stop the spread of COVID-19.

So many of us have the luxury of being able to visit the grocery store to ensure food as we work from home and share warm dinners with family at night. But for nearly 900,000 of our neighbors who face food insecurity, and for those who are newly struggling due to the economic impacts of COVID-19, stocking up, or even purchasing any food at all, may not be an option. In fact, just last week, more than 150,000 people in our state filed for unemployment claims.

During my tenure as the head of operations at Food Bank for New York City, Superstorm Sandy struck, so I’ve experienced firsthand the need for food banks to spring into action during a large-scale emergency.

Now, as the VP of Operations at CFBNJ, my job is to ensure help for neighbors in need who are suffering from the economic impact of COVID-19. The small business owner facing the pain of uncertainty, wondering when, or even if, she’ll be able to reopen. The desperate single father missing a paycheck from his hourly wage job. The vulnerable child whose stomach groans without a warm school lunch, lacking access to his only reliable source of food.
